The same 8 mm sphere moulded in polystyrene weighs about 0.30 g. Held one in each hand, the gap is obvious without any instrument, which is why imitation strands are often built heavy with a metal core or a wax fill to fake the heft.

On a bead nucleated pearl you are looking for two materials: an outer band with a soft translucent edge, and a chalkier core underneath it. A bead nucleated akoya shows a nacre band of 0.15 to 0.50 mm sitting on a shell core, and the boundary reads as a faint line rather than a step. Tissue nucleated freshwater pearls have no core at all, so the hole wall reads the same material all the way through.

On a fake

A coated bead shows a paint layer with a hard edge, often lifted or chipped where the drill broke through. Coating thickness on an imitation runs in microns rather than tenths of a millimetre, so at 10x it reads as a film and not as a band.

Nacre is built from aragonite platelets around half a micrometre thick and 10 to 20 micrometres wide, stacked in parallel sheets with organic film between them. Pearl is one of the softest things anybody wears daily, so a strand with twenty years on it shows flattened contact points, dulled patches beside the holes and sometimes a thinned area on the underside. That history is hard to fake and easy to read.

On a fake

A coated bead wears by losing its coating, which exposes a glass or plastic core as a bright bald spot with a sharp border. A strand described as vintage that shows a mirror surface on every pearl and no contact wear at the holes is telling you it was made recently.

On a fake

Moulded beads come out of one cavity, so ten measurements land on the same figure inside the tolerance of your callipers. A spread under 0.05 mm across a whole strand is a manufacturing signature, not a matching achievement.

The same strand in plastic weighs about 12 g and feels like nothing around the neck. Wax filled glass lands between the two, and that middle result is the one worth following up with a hole inspection rather than a second weighing.

Nobody sells this figure, which is the point of working it out. A pearl whose core shows through as a dull chalky look, or shows banding as you turn it under a lamp, has a nacre layer at the bottom of the range and a value to match, even though it is a real cultured pearl.

Pearl Varieties: What Changes and What Doesn’t

Five different products reach buyers under the word pearl, and a check that settles one does not always transfer to the next. Nacre thickness is the line between them. Size and sorting follow from the mollusc that grew the pearl.

Read the sorting column first, because it is the one nobody tries to copy. Akoya and freshwater pearls are graded in half millimetre steps, while Tahitian and South Sea pearls are graded in whole millimetre steps. A strand sold as 7.0 to 7.5 mm therefore contains pearls that differ from each other, and ten calliper readings will show it.

Constants come from the material rather than the farm. The GIA pearl overview puts cultured pearl at 2.60 to 2.85 specific gravity, refractive index 1.52 to 1.69, Mohs hardness 2.5 to 3.0, with cultured sizes running 2 to 16 mm. The Museum of Fine Arts materials record tightens natural pearl to 2.68 to 2.74 and cultured to 2.70 to 2.79, and lists hardness at 3 to 4.

What does not change across the five varieties is the chemistry. Every one of them is calcium carbonate laid down as aragonite with an organic binder, so every one of them lands in the same density window. That single fact is what makes a kitchen scale useful here, using the same hydrostatic method that separates stones in the diamond guide.

Colour is worth setting aside early. Dyed freshwater pearls, treated Tahitians and bleached akoya are all real cultured pearls with a treatment on them, and treatment is a disclosure question rather than an authenticity question. A black pearl at a low price is far more likely to be a dyed real pearl than a coated bead.

Imitation Families and What Gives Each One Away

Four constructions cover nearly every imitation in circulation. Each one fails a different check, which is why two numbers beat one.

  1. Solid glass with a pearlescent coat. Soda lime glass reads 2.40 to 2.50 g/cm3, close enough to pearl that the scale gives a lean rather than a verdict. The coat is the weak point: at 10x it reads as a film with a hard edge at the drill hole, and it slides against a tooth instead of dragging.
  2. Hollow glass filled with wax. The Venetian, Parisian and Bourguignon types named in the imitation pearl record are thin glass shells lined with fish scale essence and filled to weight. Density lands well under 2.4, and a warm room softens the fill enough that a pin finds it at the hole.
  3. Moulded plastic. Polystyrene reads about 1.05 and acrylic about 1.18. An 8 mm bead weighs 0.30 g against 0.73 g for the pearl it copies, and a strand of 56 comes in near 12 g against 30 g. Plastic also warms to skin temperature within seconds, while pearl stays cool longer.
  4. Shell pearl. Ground nacre bound in resin over a shell core reads 2.6 to 2.9 and feels faintly gritty, so it defeats both the scale and the tooth. The drill hole is what catches it: no growth banding, a uniform paste texture and a hole rim that crumbles rather than chips.

That fourth family is the honest problem with every at home method. A shell pearl is made of the same mineral as the pearl it imitates, and the tests on this page narrow it rather than settle it. If a seller calls a piece a shell pearl, believe them. If the price is high and the description is vague, the drill hole is the place to look.

What the Tooth Test Can and Cannot Do

The tooth test works because nacre is layered and coatings are not. Nacre is built from aragonite platelets around half a micrometre thick and 10 to 20 micrometres wide, stacked in sheets with organic film between them, as the nacre structure record sets out. Those platelet edges catch on tooth enamel and register as grit.

The gemological literature backs the result without overselling it. The reference entry on glass imitation pearls states that a glass imitation feels smooth against the cutting edges of the front teeth while natural and cultured pearls feel gritty. That is a two way test between nacre and a coating, and nothing more.

Three limits are worth knowing before anybody puts a stranger’s jewellery in their mouth. Pearl sits at Mohs 2.5 to 3.0 and tooth enamel sits near 5, so enough pressure marks the pearl rather than the tooth. A shell pearl reads gritty for the same reason a real pearl does. A heavily polished or wax treated real pearl can read smoother than it should.

Rubbing two pearls from the same strand against each other gives the same signal with none of those problems. Pick two that already touch in wear, press them together lightly and slide. Nacre against nacre drags with a dry sound. Two coated beads squeak.

Nacre Thickness: The Number Nobody Puts on the Receipt

Nacre thickness sets both durability and value on a bead nucleated pearl, and almost no retail listing states it. GIA moved this from a pass or fail judgment to a scale in May 2025, and now reports nacre in five ranges from Excellent to Poor on every pearl classification report. Before that change the majority of submissions came back with the single word Acceptable.

Laboratories read thickness with real time X-ray microradiography rather than a loupe, because the bead boundary sits under the surface. A 2025 GIA study of hybrid akoya pearls measured nacre of 1.62 to 1.68 mm on 6 mm pearls, which left nacre as roughly 90 percent of the pearl by volume against a typical akoya range of 0.15 to 0.50 mm.

Work the arithmetic on an ordinary akoya and the picture changes. An 8 mm pearl carrying 0.50 mm of nacre still has a shell bead filling 67 percent of its volume. Drop to 0.15 mm and the bead fills 89 percent. The thing around the neck is mostly shell in every case, and thickness is the whole of what separates a strand that lasts a lifetime from one that goes chalky.

GIA gives two signs you can read without an X-ray: a nucleus visible under the nacre, and a dull chalky appearance. Both point at thin nacre. Turning the pearl slowly under a single lamp adds a third. A thin layer lets the bead’s own banding show as a faint dark line that comes and goes as the pearl rotates.

None of this tells you real or fake. A chalky thin nacre akoya is a genuine cultured pearl of poor quality, which is a different complaint from an imitation and a far more common one.

What the Label Has To Say in the United States

Federal law fixes the vocabulary, so a listing that gets the wording wrong has already told you something. The definitions at 16 CFR 23.19 set three separate products: a pearl forms inside a mollusc without human intervention, a cultured pearl is nacre grown over a nucleus planted by people, and an imitation pearl is a manufactured product that looks like either one.

The labelling rules follow from those definitions:

  1. The word pearl on a cultured pearl must be immediately preceded, with equal conspicuousness, by cultured or cultivated, under 16 CFR 23.20.
  2. The word pearl on an imitation must be immediately preceded, with equal conspicuousness, by artificial, imitation or simulated.
  3. Faux pearl, fashion pearl and mother of pearl carry the same requirement when the item is an imitation.
  4. Treatments must be disclosed under 16 CFR 23.23 when they are not permanent, when they create special care requirements, or when they significantly affect value.

Equal conspicuousness is the phrase that carries weight. A title reading Freshwater Pearl Necklace with the word simulated buried in the fifth bullet is not compliant. A seller who trims the qualifier out of the title has made a choice rather than a mistake.

The word real is not a legal grade. A cultured pearl is a real pearl under this scheme, and the marketing habit of calling cultured pearls fake is wrong. The split that matters commercially is nacre over a planted bead versus a coating over a manufactured core.

Where To Get Your Pearls Authenticated

Four routes exist and they answer different questions.

A GIA pearl classification report separates natural from cultured, records the nacre range and states any treatment. It needs the piece shipped and unset where possible, takes weeks, and costs more than a modest strand is worth. For a strand that might be natural rather than cultured, it is the only route, because that distinction takes X-ray imaging of the internal structure.

A local gemologist with a refractometer and a good microscope settles imitation against nacre while you wait. Ask whether the bench has X-ray capability before you ask about nacre thickness, because without it the answer is an estimate from the drill hole.

An appraiser with a hydrostatic balance can hand you a specific gravity figure in minutes, which rules out plastic and wax filled glass outright. Take the clasp into account: a gold clasp on a plastic strand happens, and metal marks are worth reading on their own terms the way the gold guide sets out.

Run the cheap checks first. Weigh a single loose pearl, or weigh the strand and divide by the pearl count. Plastic fails that step in thirty seconds. Then take the loupe to a drill hole and look for a nacre band on a paler core. Glass and plastic fail there. The order matters because it puts the decisive checks before the ambiguous ones. A shell pearl passes the scale and the tooth, so nothing is settled until the hole has been read. A strand with no holes to read, sold as fine, is a strand to price as unknown.

Two honest limits remain. No home check separates a natural pearl from a cultured one, and no home check measures nacre thickness through the surface. Both need a laboratory with an X-ray unit, and both change the price by more than authenticity usually does.
