Fake Lululemon: Real vs Fake Rip Tag, Size Dot and Logo

Fake lululemon fails the size dot date code first, then the RN 106259 line on the rip tag and the fibre split. Each check needs a phone or a ruler.

Lululemon runs no authentication service and publishes no code key. Its Resale and Brand Protection page says genuine product is sold only through its stores, its registered e-commerce sites and approved retailers, and that the company investigates leads its guests report. What lululemon does publish is the raw material for a measured check. There is a fibre split for every style, a list price, a numeric size chart and an official resale shop. Its annual report names where the garments are sewn. The cards on this page hold a garment against those facts, and against the U.S. textile labelling rules that every rip tag has to follow.

Lululemon Variants: Align, Wunder Train, Define and Scuba

The size dot layout, the RN line and the hang tag position are shared across the range; the fibre split, the code prefix and the price change by style. Sort the garment by style code before measuring, because an Align 28 checked against Align 25 fibre rules fails for the wrong reason.

The Align pant is the most copied style because it has the least to get wrong: one fabric, one hidden pocket, one reflective mark. Lululemon’s own listing for the Align High-Rise Pant 25 reads 81 percent nylon, 19 percent Lycra elastane. It lists a hidden waistband pocket for a card or key and a length that sits above the ankle. The Align with Pockets adds side drop-in pockets and a back drop-in pocket and lists 30 dollars higher. A listing that shows side pockets under a 98 dollar Align title is describing two different garments.

The fibre line is the trap in this table. Most guides teach 81/19 as the Align rule, and for the 25 inch pant that is right. The Align 28 on lululemon.com reads 40 percent nylon, 39 percent polyester and 21 percent Lycra elastane. So a 40/39/21 tag on a full-length pant is correct, and the same tag on a 25 inch pant contradicts its own listing. The fibre line is a cross-check against the style code, never a stand-alone verdict.

The fabric name carries the same warning. Lulu Fanatics lists an earlier Scuba Oversized Half-Zip in Light Cotton Terry. The current hoodie on lululemon.com is 70 percent cotton, 30 percent recycled polyester in the body. Its rib is 97 percent cotton, 3 percent elastane. Both can be genuine. Which one you hold is settled by the dot code, not by the feel of the fleece.

Reading the Size Dot Code

The size dot is a printed fabric label sewn inside the garment, and since 2017 it has carried a style code, a manufacturing date and a batch in one string. That string is the one check a copy factory cannot fake by feel, because the parts have to agree with each other and with a public database. The Resale Doctor and Fulfilled Merchant document the same two layouts.

1. Before 2017: size only. A dot with a number and nothing else is normal on a garment made before 2017. It is a fail on a style that did not exist before 2017.
2. January 2017 to January 2019: one block. W5BEJSZ40418L reads as style W5BEJS, batch Z4, date 0418 for April 2018, and a trailing letter.
3. February 2019 onward: periods. W5DEPS.0420.0000T3.00000L reads as style W5DEPS, date 0420 for April 2020, batch T3 inside the third block, and a trailing block.
4. The style code. W or M, one digit for the garment group, three characters for the style, then S. Every documented pant and legging carries a 5 in the second position, every jacket and hoodie a 3, every bra a 2.
5. The date. Month then year, four digits. It should fall between the style’s first release on Lulu Fanatics and a few months after. A date in the future or years before the launch was invented.
6. The batch. A letter and a digit that should repeat at the foot of the rip tag on the same garment.

Where the dot sits depends on the garment, and the placement is consistent enough that a dot in the wrong place is itself a tell. Schimiggy and Lululemon Expert agree on the map. Align and Wunder Under pants carry the dot in the hidden waistband pocket at the hip. Luxtreme and Nulux tights carry it in the back waistband pocket, zipped or not. Bras and tanks with built-in cups carry it inside the left cup pocket, so the pad pocket has to be turned out to find it. Jackets carry it in the inner mesh of a pocket. Swiftly tops and other seamless pieces have no dot at all; the size is knitted into the inner hem instead.

A missing dot is not a verdict. Lululemon Expert’s guide is explicit that dots fall off and that some older styles never had one. What a dot must never do is peel. The Resale Doctor and QuerySprout both describe copies that carry a sticker under a clear plastic film in place of a printed label. Run a fingernail over the edge. A genuine dot is fabric, sewn in, and lifts with the pocket lining. A sticker lifts on its own.

The colour code lives on the hang tag, not on the dot. The Resale Doctor records it as four letters above the barcode and to the right of the style code, GLSC for Gold Spice on a Wunder Train. Search the style code on Lulu Fanatics and every colour lululemon released under that code appears with its release month. A colour that never appears under that code is a colour lululemon never made.

Rip Tag, RN Number and Label Law

A lululemon rip tag has to satisfy the U.S. Textile Fiber Products Identification Act, and the copies that fail it usually fail the law before they fail the brand. The FTC’s labelling guide sets three required disclosures on a garment sold in the United States. The first is fibre content by generic name in descending order of weight. The second is the country of origin. The third is the manufacturer’s identity, as a business name or a Registered Identification Number. Care instructions follow under a separate FTC rule.

Three details of that law turn into checks. First, trademarks are allowed only next to the generic name in type of the same size, so a genuine tag reads Lycra elastane or Lycra spandex, never Lycra alone. Second, each fibre percentage may drift 3 percent from the label under the FTC tolerance. That is why the fibre cards on this page carry a 78 to 84 window rather than a single number. Third, only fibres at 5 percent or more must be named. A fibre line that lists 2 percent of something is either unusually careful or copied from a tag on another garment.

The RN is the line most copies leave out. Lululemon’s number is RN 106259, recorded by the Resale Doctor and photographed on hundreds of resale listings alongside the Canadian registration CA 35801. The FTC runs a public search at rn.ftc.gov where the number resolves to the registered company. The check cuts one way. A wrong or missing RN is a fail. A correct RN clears nothing, because the number is printed on every genuine tag a factory could buy and copy.

The tag itself has a documented feel. The Resale Doctor describes it as white with a slight sparkle and a rough texture. Lululemon Locator describes a shiny front and a matte paper back, and a tag that tears cleanly at its light stitching without leaving holes. Both guides say the wording changed with the years. The Resale Doctor’s three-era timeline, lululemon athletica, then lululemon, then logo only, is the only written record of it. That is why that card carries Low confidence.

Spelling is the fastest rip tag test and needs no tool. Schimiggy’s guide lists the errors it has photographed: Desinged for Designed, Crup for Crop, Lycara for Lycra, and 27%lycra with no space before the fibre. QuerySprout adds china with a lower-case c. A genuine tag uses one font throughout, centred, with the country capitalised and a space between each percentage and its fibre. The Made in line then has to name a country lululemon uses. The company’s annual report for fiscal 2025 puts 40 percent of production in Vietnam and 18 percent in Cambodia. Sri Lanka and Indonesia take 11 percent each and Bangladesh 7 percent, across about 51 manufacturers. The remaining 13 percent is unnamed, so a Made in China line is rare rather than impossible, and the guides that call it an automatic fail are stricter than the filing supports.

Logo, Hang Tag and Packaging

The logo test is a test of the tips. The Resale Doctor describes the genuine mark’s tapered ends as sharp and pointy and the copies as rounded or soft. QuerySprout describes the genuine shape as thinner at the top and thicker down the sides, with copies showing shorter, thicker tails. Schimiggy adds that the reflective version on a waistband should be crisp and should not peel, while copies look elongated and lose their reflectivity. Hold the mark under a lamp and tilt it. A genuine reflective logo throws light back from every angle; a printed copy stays flat.

The hang tag carries more checkable data than any other part of the packaging. It should hang from the left side seam at the first seam below the waistband on bottoms, or bottom left on tops. The plastic fastener never passes through the rip tag. It is sturdy cardboard, not paper. Above the barcode it prints the style code and the four-letter colour code, and the barcode scans to a product. Lululemon Locator notes an RFID-style sticker under the hang tag on current styles. A hang tag with a spelling error, a font change or a QR code that resolves to nothing has failed on its own.

Packaging is a pass-or-fail check that copies get backwards. The Resale Doctor records genuine product arriving in clear, plain plastic with no logo. Branded polybags, tissue paper with the logo and boxes for a pair of leggings are the copy factory adding what the brand leaves out. A new-with-tags Align in a printed bag has been dressed up.

Stitching and hardware round out the visual pass. Schimiggy looks for puckered seams, misaligned stripes and thread that does not match the fabric. The Resale Doctor expects pristine, straight stitching and YKK zippers with plastic teeth in the garment colour. Lululemon Locator expects zipper pulls engraved with the name or the mark. Lululemon’s own listing for the Define Jacket Luon names the hardware a copy must reproduce. It lists thumbholes and Cuffins, zippered pockets, a locker loop, a zipper garage and an elastic zipper pull that doubles as a hair tie. A Define jacket with a plain metal pull and no garage is missing two features the brand’s page promises.

Dupes, Counterfeits and Who Is Chasing Them

A dupe is a legal look-alike sold under another name; a counterfeit carries the lululemon mark without permission, and only the second one is a fake. The distinction matters because lululemon is fighting both in court and the two cases look nothing alike. In June 2025 lululemon sued Costco in the Central District of California. The complaint named Kirkland, Danskin, Spyder, Jockey and Hi-Tec garments it said copied the Scuba hoodie, the Define jacket and the ABC pant. The claims were trade dress and design patents, not counterfeiting. The Fashion Law reported that by May 2026 the claims over the Kirkland pant and the Spyder jacket had been dismissed with prejudice after settlements, with one men’s jacket claim still pending. None of those garments carried a lululemon logo, a lululemon dot or RN 106259. They are not what this page is about.

The counterfeit cases run through the Northern District of Illinois under sealed Schedule A complaints. In February 2018 lululemon told the court that defendants create internet stores by the hundreds and design them to appear to be selling genuine product, and sought 2 million dollars per trademark. On April 30, 2026 it filed again, Lululemon Athletica Canada Inc. v. The Partnerships and Unincorporated Associations Identified on Schedule A, naming 23 seller aliases, among them lulu flora yoga, luxlove.live and a0aahluxury. The court granted a sealed temporary restraining order with an asset freeze on May 28 and a preliminary injunction on June 26, 2026. The names are the lesson. A storefront built around the word lulu is the pattern the brand’s own help page warns about, alongside domains with lulus in them and contact addresses at gmail.

Customs sees the same goods at the border. In August 2024 CBP officers in Wilmington, Delaware detained two shipments from China addressed to one house: 136 belt bags that arrived on August 8 and 141 that arrived on August 16. The trademark holder confirmed that all 277 were counterfeit. NBC Philadelphia put the retail value at about 13,000 dollars if genuine, which works out to roughly 47 dollars a bag. CBP’s port director called popular lululemon products prime targets for counterfeiters. Two shipments of near-identical size to one address is what a reseller’s stock looks like before it is listed as new with tags.

The principle is shared: a code a database can check, a photograph can copy, and a second physical check can contradict.

Where To Get Your Lululemon Authenticated

Lululemon does not authenticate, so the choice is between the brand’s own resale shop, a retailer rail, and the checks on this page run with the garment in hand. The company’s Like New program is the only channel where lululemon itself stands behind a used garment. Trade-ins are taken at stores in the United States and Canada, excluding outlets, pop-ups, airport stores and franchise markets. The resale shop sells only at likenew.lululemon.com. Buying there removes the question. Selling there is also a test, since a garment the program declines has failed an inspection you did not have to run.

A store rail is the second route and costs nothing. Lululemon operated 811 company stores and 45 licensed locations at the end of fiscal 2025. Take the garment in. Hold its dot beside the dot in a pocket on the rail, its rip tag beside a rip tag, its reflective mark beside a mark. Then check the return window that protects a first-hand purchase: lululemon’s policy gives 30 days from delivery for unworn, unwashed product with the hang tags attached. It excludes We Made Too Much sale items for non-members. A second-hand seller who will not match that window is asking you to carry the risk.

Legitly is the pre-screen before either route. It reads listing photographs for what a photograph can carry: the dot layout, the rip tag wording and spacing, the RN line, the logo tips and the hang tag position. It cannot measure an inseam, scan a barcode or feel a sticker lift, and it is not a certificate that a marketplace will honour. Use it to decide whether a listing deserves the tape and the phone.

Verdict: A Dot That Lies Ends It, a Soft Logo Does Not

A dot code that fails is a verdict on its own; a logo that looks off is a reason to run the next card. The dot has to agree with itself. That means a style code of six characters with the right group digit, a date after the style’s release and before today, and a batch that repeats on the rip tag. It has to agree with Lulu Fanatics on the colour. It has to be printed on fabric, not on a sticker. A dot that breaks any one of those was made by someone without the table, and nothing else on the garment can rescue it.

Everything else needs a second failure. A rip tag reading lululemon athletica could be an older garment. A 40/39/21 fibre line could be an Align 28. A Made in China line could be part of the unnamed 13 percent. A missing dot could have fallen off. But a lululemon athletica tag on a 2024 dot date, or a 40/39/21 line on a 25 inch pant that measures 22 inches, is two independent parts failing in the same direction. That is a copy.

Rank the checks by what they cost to fake. A dot string that is right for every size, colour and month costs a factory a new label for every unit, so it fails first and fails most. A fibre split that matches the exact style costs the factory the right yarn, so the tag lies about it. An RN and a capitalised country line cost nothing to print, so they pass most often. That is why a clean rip tag over a peeling dot is the usual shape of fake lululemon.
