What You Are Buying When You Buy on Poshmark

Poshmark is a peer to peer resale app rather than a shop. Manish Chandra, Tracy Sun, Gautam Golwala and Chetan Pungaliya founded the company on 10 May 2011. It is based in Redwood City, California. It listed on Nasdaq under the ticker POSH on 14 January 2021. South Korea’s Naver has owned it since 5 January 2023, closing a deal agreed the previous October at roughly $1.2 billion.

Nobody at Poshmark owns the sweater in your cart. A private seller photographs it, prices it, packs it and posts it. Poshmark supplies the app, the checkout, a prepaid label and a case desk that holds the money until a clock runs out.

That ownership gap explains more about the platform than any brand name on the home screen. Poshmark carries over 80 million registered users, and every closet is a separate small business setting its own standards for condition and honesty.

Two moves tell you where the company believes its weak spot is. It bought Suede One, an authenticity verification platform, in October 2021. It launched Posh Shows, live auction selling, in April 2023. One adds inspection capacity. The other adds a format where a buyer commits in seconds.

The money moves like this.

Two rows are unusual for resale. The prepaid label system stops at 15 lb, so boots, winter coats and anything bulky get split across orders or cancelled outright. And the authentication row really is free on both sides, which almost nothing else in the category offers. Free also means automatic, and automatic means it has a hard edge.

Buyer Protection: The 72-Hour Case Window

Posh Protect is a complaint window, not an inspection. It gives you 72 hours from delivery to open a case. Once the window shuts, payment releases and the sale is final.

The terms are published and short enough to read before the parcel lands.

Seventy two hours sounds generous until you map it onto a working week. A parcel scanned as delivered at 4pm on Friday expires at 4pm on Monday, whether or not anyone was home to collect it. The scan starts the clock, not the unboxing.

Compare that against the rest of the market. Mercari publishes the same 72 hours and charges a separate 3.6 percent Buyer Protection fee for the privilege, which we took apart clause by clause. eBay publishes 30 days under its Money Back Guarantee. GOAT publishes 30 days from receipt. Poshmark is at the short end of that range and does not charge the buyer for it.

One protection outlives the app. The FTC’s guidance on buying from an online marketplace tells shoppers to pay with a method carrying legal protections, to raise the problem with the seller and the marketplace, then to dispute the charge with the card issuer. That route is slower than an in app case. It is also still open on day nine.

Sellers carry a mirror image of this risk. Security researchers at ESET record buyers who report damage, return an inferior item in place of the original and keep the real one. The 72 hour window protects the buyer and exposes the seller, which is why photographing an item as you pack it matters as much as photographing it as you unwrap it.

Counterfeit Risk on Poshmark: Above and Below $500

Counterfeit exposure on Poshmark is governed by one threshold, and that threshold is a price rather than a category.

Posh Authenticate triggers on any item listed at $500 or higher. The seller does not post the parcel to the buyer. Poshmark issues a prepaid label to its own authentication hub, specialists examine logos, tags, stitching and overall build against the listing over 1 to 3 business days, and only then does the item travel on. All categories qualify except Electronics, Home, Pets, Toys and Games.

Failure is handled cleanly. The order is cancelled, the buyer is refunded in full straight away, the seller earns nothing, and the item does not continue to the buyer under any circumstances.

One line in the terms sets the ceiling on what the badge means. Poshmark states that the experts providing this verification are not affiliated with or certified by any brand. What you get is a trained third party holding the physical object and finding no objection. That is far more than a photo review. It is not a manufacturer certificate, and Poshmark does not describe it as one.

Below $500 none of this exists. The parcel goes seller to buyer with no stop in between, and your entire defence is the three day case window. ESET’s catalogue of common Poshmark scam patterns names the obvious consequence: counterfeits priced immediately beneath the authentication threshold. A $480 designer bag is not a bargain. It is a number chosen by someone reading the same policy page you are.

Poshmark’s counterfeit items policy is blunt about who carries the duty. Fakes, copies and replicas are banned by name, and the seller is responsible for ensuring authenticity. On a confirmed counterfeit the buyer is refunded in full, the seller receives no earnings and Poshmark may dispose of the item at its discretion. Where authenticity cannot be determined either way, the item returns to the seller and the buyer is still refunded. Both outcomes favour a buyer who opened a case in time, and neither exists for one who did not.

Risk is not spread evenly across the catalogue. Bags and small leather goods are the highest volume luxury category on the platform. They are also where the $500 line bites hardest. A Coach shoulder bag, a Gucci belt and most mid tier Louis Vuitton pouches all resell underneath it. The complaint record shows where these cases land. Poshmark.com is not a BBB accredited business. Its file logs 3468 complaints over three years, 1473 of them closed in the last twelve months. Product issues lead at 1773, then service or repair at 841, delivery at 304, billing at 203, customer service at 171, sales and advertising at 141, and order issues at 35. Trustpilot reads harsher still: 1.2 out of 5 across 5083 reviews, with 86 percent at one star and 5 percent at five.

Red Flags on a Poshmark Listing

1. A designer item priced at $460

Sitting immediately under the threshold is the single most reliable signal on the platform. Ask the seller to relist at $500 or higher. A genuine item passes the free inspection at no cost to them, so the request itself is the test.

2. Stock photographs where the interior stamp should be

Catalogue images and press shots describe a model, not the object in the box. A not as described case is far weaker when the photograph was never of your item to begin with.

3. A description that hedges on authenticity

Poshmark puts the authenticity duty on the seller in writing. A private closet promising guaranteed authentic is stating a duty it already has. A closet saying it cannot verify is admitting it has not met that duty, and that wording becomes your evidence inside the window.

4. An invitation to finish the sale somewhere else

Posh Protect covers neither trades nor transactions completed off the app. Cash App, Venmo and friends and family payment cancel the escrow, the case desk and the refund route in one message.

5. Hundreds of luxury listings with an empty sold tab

A reseller who genuinely moves volume has a sales history to show for it. A wall of Chanel and Louis Vuitton attached to no completed orders describes a closet that was assembled recently.

6. An email from Poshmark support with a link in it

Phishing that imitates Poshmark support sits among the patterns ESET documents. Cases are opened and resolved inside the app. A message asking you to confirm a transaction through a link is not the app.

Verdict: Should You Buy From Poshmark?

Buy freely below $500 when the item is ordinary. Everyday clothing, denim, shoes, kids’ gear and unbranded accessories all work well here, because the worst outcome is a condition dispute you can settle with a photograph inside three days.

Push anything branded over the $500 line. That one decision converts your order from no inspection at all to a free physical examination by specialists who hold the object before you do. No other large peer to peer platform in the United States gives that away.

Avoid the $400 to $499 band on luxury goods. It is the only range where an item is expensive enough to be worth faking and cheap enough to slip past the check. That is exactly where a counterfeit seller wants you looking.

Three habits carry the rest. Pay by card so a dispute right survives the platform clock. Film the unboxing before the tape is cut. Open the case on the day the delivery scan lands rather than the day you get round to inspecting it.
