Is eBay Legit? Where the Authenticity Guarantee Stops

eBay is legitimate and covers you for 30 days. Free physical authentication reaches seven categories above set prices, and collectibles barely enter it.

Is eBay legit is really two questions wearing one coat. Whether the company pays out when a deal goes wrong: it does, on published deadlines. Whether anyone looks at the object before it reaches you: that depends entirely on which category it sits in and what it costs.

What eBay Is, and Who Packs the Box

eBay is a marketplace rather than a retailer. Pierre Omidyar wrote the first version of it in September 1995, and the company now runs from San Jose, California.

The scale is the reason the answer matters. Full year 2025 results put gross merchandise volume at 79.6 billion dollars on 11.1 billion dollars of revenue, with 135 million active buyers counted in the fourth quarter.

Almost none of that stock belongs to eBay. Private sellers and independent businesses list it, price it, photograph it and pack it. eBay supplies search, checkout, a dispute desk and, in seven categories, a person who opens the box on the way through.

The ownership map moved twice in the past year. eBay completed its purchase of the Nordic resale app Tise on 1 October 2025. It then agreed to buy Depop from Etsy for about 1.2 billion dollars in cash, as CNBC reported in February 2026, with the sale closing at the end of July. Seller fees explain a lot of what you see in search results, so they are worth reading before the protection rules.

Read the two shoe rows against each other. One dollar of list price, from 149 to 150, cuts the seller’s fee from 13.6 percent plus a fixed charge down to a flat 8 percent. Sellers respond to that cliff by clustering listings at and just above 150 dollars, which happens to sit above the 100 dollar authentication floor. On sneakers the money and the inspection rule push the same direction. In every other category they do not.

Buyer Protection on eBay: 30 Days and Three Published Clocks

eBay Money Back Guarantee is a claims programme, and its numbers are the most generous published by a large United States marketplace. It costs the buyer nothing.

The policy text sets out each deadline rather than describing a general willingness to help.

Thirty days changes buyer behaviour in a way that shorter windows cannot. A parcel that lands while you are away still leaves three weeks of slack. Mercari runs the opposite experiment, and its 72 hour clock produces the complaint pattern you would expect. StockX sits between the two, and its 14 day Buyer Promise attaches only to Verified orders.

Two limits matter more than the headline. The guarantee does not cover real estate, websites, businesses for sale, digital content, intangible goods, NFTs, classified ads, services, motor vehicles, travel tickets or industrial equipment. Several of those appear beside ordinary listings in the same search.

The second limit is that a claim is an argument, not an inspection. Nothing in the Money Back Guarantee means anyone looked at your item. That job belongs to a separate programme with much narrower reach.

One protection sits outside eBay entirely. Federal law requires online marketplaces to collect and publish contact details for high volume third party sellers and to give buyers a route to report suspicious listings, which the FTC explains for shoppers. A seller page with no verifiable business identity behind a high volume of sales is a compliance question as well as a buying question.

Counterfeit Risk on eBay: Seven Doors, Each With a Price Floor

Authenticity Guarantee is the strongest free authentication in United States resale, and it reaches a smaller share of listings than buyers believe.

Here is the whole grid, taken from eBay’s category eligibility rules.

The inspection itself is real work. An authenticator opens the package, confirms the contents match the listing title, description and images, then runs a multi step physical examination. It generally finishes inside 2 business days, and the item travels on with a numbered card or tag. An item that fails is stopped at the facility, never forwarded, and the buyer is refunded without having to build a case.

That is a materially different promise from a photo review. A remote opinion on seller supplied images can only judge what the seller chose to photograph.

Now the gap, which matters most in the category this page sits in. Collectibles reach the programme through exactly two doors. Trading cards qualify at 200 dollars, a threshold lowered from a much higher starting point as the card market grew. Coins qualify at 500 dollars and only in a graded holder from a named grader.

Everything else in collectibles has no door at all. Vinyl figures, blind box toys, sealed LEGO, insulated drinkware, action figures, autographed memorabilia and sealed trading card product below the threshold all ship seller to buyer with nobody in between. A 180 dollar raw card sits five percent below the line and is inspected exactly as often as a 3 dollar one.

That makes your own measurement the entire defence in this category. The written rules are stricter than the inspection footprint. eBay’s counterfeit policy bans counterfeits, unauthorised copies such as bootleg recordings and burned media, and unauthorised replicas including plated bullion offered without refiner detail. It also restricts listing language: the word dupe attached to a brand name, and inspired by phrasing that carries a logo or trademark, both breach the policy. Enforcement runs from removing the listing through warnings and account restrictions to suspension.

Volume is the reason those rules exist. Counterfeit goods now reach buyers mainly in small parcels rather than in containers, a shift visible across a decade of US Customs and Border Protection seizure data. Small parcels are the shape of an online order.

The Better Business Bureau lists eBay with an A plus rating and records that the company is not BBB accredited. The rating measures responsiveness to complaints rather than the authenticity of any listing.

Red Flags That Should Stop an eBay Purchase

1. A sneaker priced at 99 dollars

One dollar below the authentication floor is not a coincidence on a pair worth inspecting. Ask the seller to relist at 100 dollars or higher and watch what happens next.

2. A designer handbag at 480 dollars

The free inspection begins at 500 dollars, and the 40 dollar add on covers 200 to 499.99. A listing parked just under the line has chosen the one price band where neither route is automatic.

3. Dupe or inspired by in the title

Both phrasings breach eBay’s own counterfeit policy when a brand name, logo or trademark rides along. The wording is also the seller stating in advance what the item is not.

4. An invitation to finish the sale elsewhere

Every deadline above lives inside eBay checkout. A message suggesting a direct bank transfer, a payment app or a sale off platform removes the guarantee, the escalation path and the refund clock in one step.

5. Catalogue photographs on a used collectible

Press images tell you nothing about the object in the box. A not as described claim is far weaker when the listing photograph was never of your item.

6. A raw card listed at 195 dollars

Five dollars below the trading card threshold buys the seller an unexamined route to you. On a card where 200 dollars is arguable, ask for the higher price and the inspection that comes with it.

7. A high volume seller with no business details shown

Marketplaces are required to publish contact information for high volume third party sellers. A page that shows none, next to hundreds of monthly sales, is worth a report rather than an order.

Alternatives to eBay, Ranked by What Gets Opened

The trade across the market is consistent. A longer window costs nothing much, while a physical inspection costs either a fee or a narrower catalogue.

The last row is the useful comparison. Depop publishes a similar claim period and inspects nothing at any price, which is why two platforms under the same owner now offer very different protection for the same handbag.

Verdict: When eBay Is the Safest Option, and When It Is Not

Buy on eBay with confidence when the item clears an authentication floor. A 1,200 dollar watch, a 600 dollar handbag from an eligible brand, a 250 dollar graded card and a 150 dollar sneaker all get a trained person and a physical examination before they reach you, at no cost. No other United States marketplace offers that combination free.

Treat it as an ordinary peer to peer marketplace below those floors. A 180 dollar card, a 90 dollar sneaker, a 450 dollar bag and every vinyl figure ever listed travel unopened, protected only by a 30 day argument you have to win with photographs.

Three habits carry most of the weight. Check the category floor before you bid rather than after. Pay by a method that leaves you a separate dispute right. Film the unboxing on a sealed or graded item, because seal geometry and label alignment are the evidence a claim turns on.

The rule of thumb: on eBay, price is not only what you pay. It decides whether anyone looks.
