Chanel Serial Number Check: What the Numbers Mean

A Chanel serial number check turns the 7 or 8 digit sticker code into a production window and no more. It cannot prove the bag is real. Type it in to read it.

How Chanel Serial Numbers Work

A Chanel serial number is a running count, not a code. Chanel numbered bags in sequence from the mid 1980s until 2022, and the first one or two digits tell you which block of numbers, or series, the bag belongs to. Because each series was used up over roughly a year, the series gives a production window. That is the whole system. There is no factory letter, no month, no model reference hidden in the digits, and Chanel has never published a key.

The count started with six digits, according to Xupes, Oh My Goldness and Lollipuff, which describe plain black-on-white stickers beginning with 1 from 1984 to 1986. Two other guides, Legitique and Garde Robe Italy, say Chanel began numbering in 1986 with seven digits. The seven digit era is not disputed: it ran from series 0 in 1986 to series 9 in 2005, with the first digit naming the series. When the count passed 9999999 in 2005, the numbers grew to eight digits, and the first two digits name the series from 10 through 32.

The number sits on a white sticker inside the bag, and the same number is embossed on a black authenticity card with a gold border that came with the bag at purchase. Yoogi’s Closet, Fashionphile and Rome Station all describe the card the same way. The sticker and card were issued together for every bag from the mid 1980s until 2021, when Chanel dropped both.

From the 21A collection in 2021, Chanel bags carry a small metal plate instead. Madison Avenue Couture reported the change in April 2021: an engraved CC logo, an 8 character alphanumeric code under it, and an NFC chip inside that only Chanel’s boutique equipment can read. The plate code is random. It does not count up and it does not encode a year.

One rule holds across every era. The number has to agree with the bag. A series 14 sticker on a Boy bag, a model that launched in autumn 2011 during series 15, is wrong. A series 8 sticker on a 2.55 Reissue, a model that launched in 2005, is wrong. The checker on this page reads the shape and names the window. Agreement between the window and the bag is the part only you can check.

Format Table: Every Chanel Serial Series and Its Years

The checker strips spaces and dashes and ignores case before matching, so 25 123 456 and 25123456 read the same. The years come from the charts published by Yoogi’s Closet, Legitique, Xupes, Into Archive and Rome Station. Where the charts disagree, the table shows the overlap.

Two things about the boundaries. First, Chanel did not start a new series on 1 January. A series began when the previous block ran out, so most series straddle two calendar years, and a bag bought in March can carry the previous year’s series. Second, the guides disagree by up to a year at several boundaries: Legitique puts series 23 in 2017 alone, Yoogi’s Closet in 2016-2017; Into Archive stretches series 7 back to 2000. The checker reports the overlap and names the sources in each result.

Reading the Digits: Which Ones Carry the Year

Only the prefix carries information. On a seven digit sticker the first digit is the series. On an eight digit sticker the first two digits are the series. The remaining six digits are the position in the sequence. A higher number within a series means a later bag. That is why Lollipuff can split series 1: 043xxxx to 15xxxxx is late 1980s to 1990, and 16xxxxx to 19xxxxx is 1990-1991.

The rest of the digits identify nothing else. They do not name the model, the colour, the factory or the country. A Classic Flap and a Wallet on Chain made in the same week carry consecutive numbers in the same series and nothing in the digits tells them apart. Miss Bugis and Lollipuff both make the point that the number is unique to one item, like a Rolex serial, and that two genuine Chanel bags never share one.

That uniqueness is the checker’s blind spot. A counterfeiter photographs one genuine sticker and the same number appears on hundreds of fakes. Real Authentication, which runs its own Chanel serial code checker, says so on the checker page: even counterfeit items can be stamped with genuine serial codes. The digits on a fake can be perfect. The typography usually is not, which is why the next section matters more than the number.

The Sticker Itself: What Changed and When

The sticker changed more than the number did, and each change is dated. The features below come from Fashionica, Oh My Goldness, Xupes, Glampot, Lollipuff and Yoogi’s Closet, and the table lists only the ones at least two of them describe.

Yoogi’s Closet is the only guide that dates the typography changes to the year, so the 1994 strikethrough and the 1994-1996 sans-serif window rest on one source and the checker says so. The 2000 onward rule, strikethrough zero plus serif one, is repeated by Xupes, Oh My Goldness, Glampot and Rome Station and is safe to lean on.

The most useful check is the mismatch. A series 2 sticker with gold glitter did not exist. A series 20 sticker with an oval zero did not exist. A series 5 sticker starting 51 with X cuts is out of step with the two guides that place the security features from about 57xxxxx. Counterfeiters print one sticker design and change the digits, so an old series on a new design is the single most common error they make.

Age does its own damage, and it is not a warning sign. Fashionphile notes that genuine stickers curl, yellow and turn purple with time. A bag from series 12 is nearly twenty years old. A lifted corner or a lilac tint on that sticker is expected. A pristine, flat, bright white sticker on a bag that old is the odd case.

The Metal Plate: Chanel Serial Numbers From 2021

The metal plate replaced the sticker and the card at the same time. Luxe Du Jour and Madison Avenue Couture both put the change at the 21A collection, with Madison Avenue Couture dating the launch to April 2021. Every guide agrees on the sequence: sticker plus card until 2021, plate alone from 2021. A bag with a sticker and a plate has one too many identifiers, and Xupes states outright that genuine bags never carry both.

The plate is small. Glampot measures it at about 20 mm by 13 mm by 2 mm. Madison Avenue Couture and Luxe Du Jour describe it as about 1.2 inches wide, which is 30 mm. The two figures disagree by a centimetre, so the checker treats plate size as a low confidence measurement and does not use it as a rule. What every source agrees on: the metal is colour matched to the bag’s hardware, the CC logo is laser engraved above the code, and the plate sits inside the bag. Coco Approved and Glampot both locate it inside the zip pocket on the Wallet on Chain. New bags ship with a protective plastic film over the plate, according to Fashionphile.

The code is eight characters, mixed letters and digits, and Oh My Goldness and Fashionphile both state that it opens with a letter. It is random, so it says nothing about the year. Fashionphile puts it plainly: there is no connection between the year of manufacture and these codes. Small leather goods get the same 8 character code on a sticker format, per Fashionphile, so a wallet may still carry a sticker after 2021.

The chip behind the plate is NFC. Chanel has never released a consumer app to read it, and Madison Avenue Couture, Luxe Du Jour and Glampot all report that only boutique staff with proprietary equipment can scan it. Chanel’s own fashion FAQ confirms the wider position: authentication of products is not a service offered by CHANEL, and authenticity is guaranteed only for purchases from a Chanel boutique or authorised retailer. Chanel’s anti-counterfeit page adds that there are no authorised sellers of Chanel leather goods on the internet at all.

So the plate is checkable only for format. Luxe Du Jour makes the uncomfortable point that a look-alike plate is easy to make and the chip behind it is impossible for a buyer to verify. The plate raised the bar for counterfeiters by one step and removed the sticker typography that authenticators relied on for twenty years.

Where To Find the Chanel Serial Number

The sticker is inside the bag, low down, and often on a leather tab rather than the lining itself. The placements below are the ones two or more guides describe.

Classic Flap and 2.55 Reissue: on a horizontal leather tab stitched into the lower left interior, or stuck flat in a lower corner of the lining. Rome Station, Miss Bugis and Into Archive all point to the lower corners. On the Reissue the tab is often inside the back slip pocket.

Boy bag: inside an interior pocket or on a side wall of the lining, per Rome Station and Fashionica. The Boy’s lining is fabric, so the sticker usually sits on a leather tab rather than on the fabric directly.

Wallet on Chain and small flaps: inside the zip pocket. Coco Approved and Glampot give this location for the metal plate on the WOC, and the sticker sat in the same place before 2021.

Wallets and card holders: stamped or stuck inside a central card slot, a bill compartment or behind a card flap, per Fashionica and Rome Station. Wallet serials are hard to see because the sticker is tucked deep. Fashionphile notes that after 2021 small leather goods carry the 8 character code on a sticker rather than a plate.

Vintage bags from before the mid 1980s: nowhere. Lollipuff, Legitique and Garde Robe Italy all state that bags made before serial numbers began carry none. A pre-1986 bag with a modern sticker is the mismatch to watch for, not the absence.

The sticker can also be gone from a genuine bag. Yoogi’s Closet, Fashionphile and Lollipuff each say the same thing: stickers fall off, get peeled by previous owners or are removed by resellers, and cards are lost. A missing sticker lowers the resale price and removes one check. It does not, on its own, make the bag a fake.

Serial Sticker vs Authenticity Card vs Retail Tag vs Plate

Four things on or around a Chanel bag carry numbers a buyer might type into a checker. Only two of them are serial numbers.

The card is the piece most often trusted too much. Into Archive notes that cards are easier to fake than bags, and Rome Station reminds buyers that the card must match the sticker exactly. A card with a number one digit off from the sticker belongs to a different bag. A card sold with a post-2021 bag is a card that should not exist.

The retail tag is the piece most often mistyped. Yoogi’s Closet decodes the tag into a season code, a style code, a material and hardware code and a colour code. A37591 is a 2.55 Reissue 228 flap; Y04373 is metallic calfskin with ruthenium hardware; 94305 is black. All of it names the product, none of it names the bag, and the checker returns a caution with that explanation when it sees the shape.

What This Lookup Cannot Tell You

A valid Chanel serial number does not mean a genuine Chanel bag. Every series in the table has been copied. Counterfeiters photograph genuine stickers and reprint the same digits, and Real Authentication, Legitique and Lollipuff all warn that a correct number appears on fakes as a matter of routine. Handbags and wallets stay near the top of the counterfeit categories that U.S. Customs and Border Protection seizes each year, and CBP’s fiscal year 2025 figures put the manufacturer’s retail value of seized handbags and wallets at 978 million dollars. The copies that reach buyers carry plausible Chanel numbers.

The lookup cannot query Chanel. Chanel holds the register that links each number to a bag and does not open it. The company’s FAQ states that authentication is not a service it offers, and its anti-counterfeit page says it cannot share identifying details because counterfeiters would use them. There is no Chanel database for the public, no app for the NFC plate and no boutique service for a bag bought elsewhere.

The lookup cannot give an exact date. A series is a window of about a year, and the windows overlap at the edges because Chanel changed series when a block of numbers ran out. The guides this page draws on disagree by up to a year at several boundaries, and the checker reports the overlap rather than picking a side. A seller who quotes a month of manufacture from a Chanel sticker is inventing precision the number does not hold.

The lookup cannot read a plate code at all beyond its shape. The 8 character code is random by design. It carries no year, no model and no sequence. Two guides say it opens with a letter and that is the only structural fact available, so the checker passes the shape and stops.

The lookup cannot see the sticker. The strikethrough zero, the serif feet, the two CC logos, the X cuts, the glitter under the laminate and the vertical CHANEL are physical features. A perfect number on a sticker with a plain oval zero in the eight digit era is wrong. A perfect number printed on a sticker without X cuts on a 2015 bag is wrong. The checker cannot see either.

The lookup cannot confirm the card. A card number that matches the sticker proves the two were printed together, which a counterfeiter does as easily as Chanel. A card that does not match proves the pair does not belong together. Only the second result carries information.

The lookup cannot rule on a bag with no number. Genuine stickers fall off, and genuine bags made before the mid 1980s never had one. Silence from the checker is not a verdict.

From Format Check to Physical Check

Treat the number as the first filter. For a second-hand Chanel bag, a sensible sequence runs in six steps.

1. Read the number here. Confirm the digit count fits the era and the series matches a documented window.
2. Check the bag existed in that window. No Boy bag before series 15. No Reissue before series 9. No Gabrielle before series 22. No metal plate before 21A.
3. Match the sticker design to the series. Glitter, X cuts and two CC logos from about 57xxxxx onward. Strikethrough zero from 1994. Plain white with no security features before 1997.
4. Compare the card, if there is one. Same digits, embossed, black with a gold border. After 2021 there should be no card at all.
5. Look at the rest of the bag. Quilting stitch density, hardware weight and finish, CC turnlock alignment and heat stamp depth all carry more weight than the sticker.
6. Pay for an opinion on a high-value piece. Chanel offers none. A consignment house or a paid authentication service that handles the bag in person is the only route to a written verdict.
