Buyers ask how to tell if AirPods Max are fake because the copies now photograph well. The anodising matches, the canopy is knit mesh, the box is white card. What a copy cannot match is Apple’s published mass, three dimensions that have not changed since 2020, and a serial printed where only Apple prints it. The cards on this page turn the question into twelve readings. A 0.1 g kitchen scale, digital callipers, a loupe and an iPhone cover every one of them, and none of them needs the original box.

Why the Scale Decides an AirPods Max Faster Than Anything Else

Weigh the headphones before anything else, because AirPods Max is the heaviest product Apple has ever asked anyone to wear on their head. Apple’s tech specs put the 2020 model at 384.8 grams and the 2024 USB-C model at 386.2 grams. AirPods Max 2 keeps the 386.2 g figure on Apple’s 2026 spec sheet. That mass comes from a stainless steel headband frame, two machined aluminium ear cups and two H-series chips, one in each cup.

A clone cannot reach that number with its parts. Swap the steel for plastic and the aluminium for painted ABS and the set lands between 250 g and 340 g. Counterfeiters know this, so the better copies glue metal slugs inside the cups. That fix is detectable. A padded clone reads close on the scale and then sits wrong in the hand. The added mass sits at the bottom of each cup instead of spreading through the frame. Hold a genuine pair by the middle of the headband and it hangs level. AirPods Max Generations: What Changed in 2024 and 2026

Three generations of AirPods Max exist, and two of them look identical. Apple shipped the first in December 2020 with a Lightning port. In September 2024 the same headphones returned with USB-C and five new colours. On 16 March 2026 Apple announced AirPods Max 2 at $549. What did not change between 2020 and 2026 is the more useful table, because a counterfeiter has to hit every row of it whichever generation the box claims.

Three fixed dimensions are hard on a copy shop. Aluminium cups are machined, so a genuine pair repeats its width to a tenth of a millimetre. Clone cups are injection moulded, so they shrink as they cool and vary between units. Measure the left cup and the right cup of the same clone and the two figures often disagree by more than Apple’s whole tolerance.

AirPods Max 1 from 2020 therefore carries the older 12-character format, while the 2024 USB-C model and AirPods Max 2 carry 10. A 9-character string, a 14-character string, or a string containing a lowercase letter is a fail. So is a cushion that will not come off, because a glued cushion means there is nothing printed underneath to show.

A valid serial is not a pass, and this is where most buyer checklists stop too early. Apple’s Check Coverage tool confirms that a serial exists in Apple’s records and reports warranty status. The status LED sits level under the surface rather than protruding or sinking into a drilled pinhole, and it glows white or amber. A blue or red LED has never shipped on AirPods Max.

Box details are worth a glance and nothing more, because packaging is the cheapest thing to copy well. The genuine box is bright white rather than cream, the product image is embossed, and the serial is on a printed sticker rather than inked onto the card. Take those as supporting evidence. The box is not the product, and a real box holding a clone is a standard resale trick.

Where To Get Your Apple AirPods Max Authenticated

Apple does not run an authentication service, but an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider will tell you whether a set is eligible for service, and a counterfeit is not. Book a Genius Bar appointment, bring both cups and the Smart Case, and ask for a diagnostic. The technician reads the serial from the hardware rather than from the print, which is the one test a copied serial cannot survive. It costs nothing and it ends in an answer from Apple.
